Isaiah 65 | The Wolfe Notes

Welcome, Family! We're nearing the end of our Isaiah 2024 study. While we claim no expertise, we're excited to sit with you as we both learn at the feet of Jesus. Each month, we offer a calendar that outlines daily exercises (adapted from Jenn Wilkin's Women of the Word Bible study process) to progress through Isaiah. Download December's calendar to follow along with us and witness what we uncovered in our weekly "Wolfe Notes" postings.

Different Versions

I read Chapter 65 in the King James Version (KJV) and The Voice (VOICE). The KJV is a word-for-word translation while The Voice is a paraphrase.

Major differences I noticed (*My thoughts alone are in italics and designated with an asterisk.):

Isaiah 65:1

  • Comparisons:
    • KJV: (1) I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation (2) that was not called by my name.
    • VOICE: Eternal One: (1) I was ready and willing to help before anyone even asked. I was found by people who did not seek Me; I showed My face and said, "Here I am! I am right here!" to a nation (2) which did not call on Me.
  • Discrepancies:
    1. "I am sought of them" (KJV) vs. "I was ready and willing to help" (VOICE). In the KJV, the people are searching for God, but in the VOICE God is waiting for the people to ask. The KJV reminds me of the idea of a "God-shaped hole", when people know they are missing something but don't know that what they are missing is God. The VOICE shifts my thoughts to God and how frustrating it must be for Him to watch us suffering but refuse to ask Him for help.
    2. "That was not called by my name." (KJV) vs. "which did not call on me" (VOICE). The KJV reminds me of the open invitation God offers to all people, while the VOICE maintains the mood of the previous clause: God's frustration at being ignored.
  • Thoughts: The VOICE maintains the message of the rest of the chapter: God's frustration while He watches His people ignore and purposefully defy His ways. The rendering of the KJV connects with Isaiah 65:8. Here, God agrees not to destroy all of us because even in unexpected places a faithful servant may be found.

Isaiah 65:11

  • Comparisons:
    • KJV: But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, (1) that prepare a table for that troop, and (2) that furnish the drink offering unto that number.
    • VOICE: But those of you who ignore Me, the Eternal One - who turn away from My sanctuaries And reject My holy mountain (1) to chase Lady Luck and (2) cater to Destiny.
  • Discrepancy: In both of these clauses, I am unsure what the KJV describes, but guess it is an unacceptable practice. In the VOICE, we get a clearer picture: the people rely on Luck and Destiny to God.
  • Clarifications:
    • A few other interpretations are:
      • "spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny" NIV
      • "set a table for Gad [the Babylonian god of fortune], And who furnish a drink offering for Meni [the god of fate]" AMP
    • The Hebrew phrases are:
      • "set a table for fortune" The other place "Gad" is used is as a name for the first son Leah's servant Zilpah bare when she first stopped conceiving. Which the KJV explains her reasoning as "A troop cometh" and the VOICE "Good fortune has arrived!" The word Gad also means "troop" and is derived from a root meaning "to cut or invade".
      • "fill mixed wine to fate " We can understand the KJV's interpretation by looking at the word's origin: to count or number. However, Meni and Gad were likely pagan deities linked with destiny and fate respectively.
  • Thoughts: This has me asking, where, when, and how do I rely on luck and fortune to trusting in God's plan?

  • Comparisons:
    • KJV: There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; (1) but the sinner (2) being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
    • VOICE: Never again will a person not live a full life, for the young will live to be a hundred (1) And any (2) who die earlier will be considered cursed.
  • Discrepancies:
    1. "But the sinner" (KJV) vs. "And any" (VOICE). The KJV creates a juxtaposition between the sinner and the godly, while the VOICE makes no precise distinction.
    2. "Being an hundred years old" (KJV) vs. "who die earlier" (VOICE). The KJV implies the sinner could still live to be a hundred, but his days will be cursed, while the VOICE implies any who don't reach a hundred will be considered cursed.
  • Thoughts: For this verse, I prefer the KJV translation because of the  sinner to godly and cursed to full life juxtapositions that fit with the rest of the passage.

  2. Through Judah's seed, I will create a path of salvation, and My servants will dwell and inherit My mountain.
    1. ! [Zacchaeus] has become a son of Abraham in a spiritual sense, following Abraham's example of faith. In a way, [Zacchaeus's story] is the story of all who come to faith in Christ. Jesus meets us where we are, calling us down out of our tree and inviting himself to dinner. And when we climb down and meet him, the encounter changes us. That change is reflected in what we do. And we become sons and daughters of Abraham." from "Becoming a Son of Abraham" at A Clay Jar.

Research

*Thoughts that are mine alone are marked with an asterisk and italicized.
To what offensive rituals is God referring that the people who worshiped other gods practiced? (Isaiah 65:3-4)

Sacrificing in Gardens

The Israelites would forsake God's temple and worship elsewhere.
  • A common practice in Judah under King Ahaz.
    • You will be ashamed because you found pleasure in idols and oaks; you will suffer disgrace because you bowed before images in gardens. Isaiah 1:29 VOICE (See also Isaiah 66:17, Micah 5:13-14)
    • For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out their drink offerings. Ezekiel 20:28 KJV
  • Even though they were commanded to destroy these places of worship to strange gods:
    • Completely destroy all the places where the nations you're going to conquer worshiped their gods - on the mountain heights and hilltops, and under every leafy tree. Moses: Tear down their altars, smash their monoliths, burn their sacred poles, and shatter their idols! Wipe out every trace of the names of their gods in those places. Deuteronomy 12:2-3 VOICE
    • But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Matthew 15:13 KJV
  • A popular example involved highly sensualized worship of Daphne near Antioch

Burning Incense on Roofs

Instead of a specially crafted altar of gold set aside specifically for burning incense, Israelites would use bricks inscribed with superstitious (ungodly) symbols.
  • More accurately, "bricks" instead of roofs. Burning incense on roofs, often paved with bricks, was a popular practice in Judah.
    • The king [Josiah] also tore down the roof altars, Ahaz's upper room which was crafted by Judah's kings, and the altars crafted by Manasseh for the two courts in the Eternal's house. He crushed them into piles of dust, and then he tossed the dust into the Kidron brook. 2 Kings 23:12 VOICE (See also Jeremiah 19:13.)
    • And them that worship the hose of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by tyhe Lord, and that swear by Malcham; And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him. 000Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD... Zephaniah 1:5-7 KJV
  • Bricks were easily inscribable. They would inscribe the bricks with superstitious symbols. God's altar was to be made of unhewn stone. Unhewn stone does not lend itself well to inscriptions.
    • But if you decide to build an altar out of stones for Me, use only natural stones, not hand-cut stones, because any attempt to shape them with your tools will desecrate the altar. Exodus 20:25 VOICE
  • The altar of gold was intended for incense.
    • Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest: Deuteronomy 12:13 KJV
    • Place the golden altar for incense in front of the covenant chest outside the veil, and install the curtain at the entrance to the congregation tent. Exodus 40:5 VOICE

Graves, Mountains, Sepulchers, and Caverns

Israelites believed sleeping in these areas produced supernatural dreams or visions from deceased ancestors, through necromancy, or from demonic spirits that dwelt therein.
  • There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and becasue of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 KJV
  • And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Isaiah 8:19 KJV
  • That will humble you so low, you'll speak from the earth itself. And when you do, your voice will issue from the very dust where you lie; Your voice will rise from the ground like the voice of a ghost, like a soft whisper from the earth. Isaiah 29:4 VOICE (See our research on this verse.)
  • When Jesus came ashore there, He was immediately met by a man who was tortured by an evil spirit. This man lived in the cemeteries, and no one could control him - not even those who tried to tie him up or chain him. Mark 5:2-3 VOICE (See also Matthew 8:28.)

Swine Flesh

Forbidden by God because it was preferred by heathens. Yet the Israelites were continuously enticed by the pagan rituals.
  • The broth of swine flesh was accepted by idols and often used in magic rites.
    • That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. Acts 15:29
    • Bring only the best crops from your first harvest into the house of the Eternal your God. You must not boil a baby goat in its mother's milk. Exodus 23:19 VOICE
  • The term "idolatrous abominations" refers to the foulest sin of all - killing Jesus and rejecting Him still.

*Thoughts: Essentially, the Israelites acted against commands God gave them (Isaiah 65:12). Even though we may think we're getting what we want or that no consequence will result from our actions, Matthew Henry warns us to "watch against pride and self-preference, remembering that every sin, and the most secret thoughts of man's heart, are known and will be judged by God." Let us do as God says because He knows us and knows what's best for us. The truth is, we don't.

    Summary

Men reject and mock God. Yet God still plans and moves for those who do choose Him.

    Memorize

I chose to memorize Isaiah 65:18 VOICE:
So take JOY and celebrate with unending gladness on account of what I am creating. Look carefully! I am making this place I've chosen, this Jerusalem, a city of JOY. I'm making her citizens, My people, a people of gladness.

*Because I need a little JOY in my life. I need to allow myself to feel it and to believe that even more JOY is coming!

Hebrews 12:22-24 KJV

    ...a city of JOY.

    • And all peoples of all the nations will walk by its unfailing light, and the rulers of the earth will stream into the city bringing with them the symbols of their grandeur and power. During the day, tis gates will not be closed; the darkness of night will never settle in. The glory and grandeur of the nations will be on display there, carried to the holy city by people from every corner of the world. Nothing that defiles or is defiled can enter into its glorious gates. Those who practice sacrilege or deceptions will never walk its streets. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life can enter. Revelation 21:24-27 VOICE
    • And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5 KJV
    • You'll never hear again, "Help! Call the guards!" Violence, destruction, and ruin will be things of the past in Jerusalem. You will name the city walls Salvation, and the city gates Praise. You won't need the sun to brighten the day or the moon and lamps to give you light. The Eternal One will be all the light you ever need. Your God will provide your glory, brilliance for all time. Your sun will never set; your moon will never be eclipsed in shadow. For you'll bask in the Eternal's light and silver splendor forever. Never again will you suffer the dark night of despair and gloom of mourning. Isaiah 60:18-20 VOICE

I'm making her citizens, My people, ...

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. • God will swallow up death forever. The Lord, the Eternal, will wipe away the tears from each nad every face And deflect the scorn and shame His people endure from the whole world, for the Eternal determined that it should be so. And in that moment, at that glorious time, people will say, People: This is our God! We put our hope in him. We knew that He would save us! This is our God, the Eternal for whom we waited. Let us rejoice and celebrate in His liberation. Isaiah 25:8-9 VOICE
    • Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into JOY, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 31:12-14 KJV (See also Psalm 126:2-3.)

*Thoughts: Choose JOY and hold on to it. We can trust in what is coming because God is planning it! He will create a new, glorious dwelling place -  a happy place with happy people. Now that's something to look forward to!

    Respond

God is not forceful. He wants us to choose Him (Isaiah 65:11-13) and agonizes when we don't (Isaiah 65:4-7).

I can be forceful, especially when there is something I really want or when I believe my viewpoint is correct. I want people to agree with my opinion, solution, or choice and agonize when they don't. But, really, the only thing I should care about is if I'm choosing God's way.

I will not insist on my own way (I Corinthians 13:4-5). Instead, when I grow frustrated that others don't choose my solution, agree with my opinion, or support my choice, I will turn my emotions and affections to God's way instead of putting my way higher than His. I will continue pursuing that person in His love knowing that His will is for them. He alone is the fair rewarder of good and punisher of wrong.

    In Closing

Father God, forgive me. I get so caught up in my life, my wants, my ideas, my plans, that I defend those instead of seeking You. I agonize over things that don't matter and treat the people You love poorly. Teach me to pursue Your peace and love with all of Your creation and trust You to punish evil and reward righteousness. Remind me that what matters most is for people to find rest in Your ways instead of agonizing that they are not following mine.
